InterContinental Energy’s three green hydrogen projects are still among the largest in the world, and probably the most advanced of all the multi-gigawatt plans under development.

Here’s what we know about them so far:

Western Green Energy Hub

Location: Goldfields region, southern Western Australia

Electrolyser capacity: 35GW

Renewables capacity: 70GW

Expected green hydrogen output: Five million tonnes a year

Planned offtakers: “We expect that one mainly to be focused on ammonia export,” says CEO Alex Tancock. “There are clients in Asia, whether it’s Singapore, Japan, Korea, even China.”

Ownership: InterContinental Energy (50.1%), CWP Global (39.9%), Mirning Green Energy (10%).

Australian Renewable Energy Hub (AREH)

Location: Pilbara region, northern Western Australia

Electrolyser capacity: 12.5GW

Renewables capacity: 25GW (as well as a further 1GW of green electrons to be sold locally from late 2027)

Expected green hydrogen output: 1.6 million tonnes a year

Planned offtakers: The local iron-ore industry is the most likely long-term buyer, which currently has several groups pursuing green iron ambitions at different paces, including Rio Tinto, BHP, Fortescue and a consortium led by Posco (NB: Hydrogen Insight has learned that Posco currently has no interest in buying green hydrogen from the project)

Ownership: BP (63.57%), InterContinental (26.39%) and CWP Global (10.04%)

Green Energy Oman

Electrolyser capacity: 12.5GW

Renewables capacity: 25GW

Expected green hydrogen output: 1.8 million tonnes a year

Planned offtakers: A mix of local companies and overseas buyers

Ownership: Shell (35%), Omani oil company OQ (25%), Kuwaiti clean-energy developer EnerTech (18.84%) and InterContinental (21.16%).
